unfortunate.

‘N s’very likely MORE people could get hurt wit’ me

I thought y’were all about law ‘n order ‘n followin’ rules.
Y’do realize th’Accords aren’ jus’ a set of guidelines?
They aren’ ASKIN’ ya t’follow ‘em, they’re tellin’ ya.

the problem wasn‘t so much that she was out of breath or that she could
not go on- it was more the fact that they kept fighting, kept standing up,
kept rushing after steve and his friend. and she was losing focus, she
could feel it. there was no way she could keep this up much longer without
actually hurting anybody. her gaze flickered over to clint and she nodded.
he was right, as long as the two of them got to escape they’d be fine…

“i’m with you!” another nod as she blocked an attack from rhodey.
“what happens when this is over? how do we end this?” how could
this end? tony would certainly not give up. as for the others, they seemed
pretty determined, too. and wanda wouldn’t back down as long as they
didn’t. “how do we make this stop?”

image

Notching another pair of arrows on his bow, the archer fired them at Tony,
before sliding himself across the ground to hide behind a stack of crates.
From the corner of his sight, he could see Steve and Bucky making their
way to the quinjet again. Gotta keep their attention on us. Much as Clint
   tried to keep his head in the battle, though, worry still kept nagging at him;
mainly about Wanda, and the questions she was asking. Or, rather than the
questions, it was the answers which unnerved him. He hated to draw the
witch into a battle that wasn’t hers, just as it wasn’t his own; but he’d hate
himself even more if he sheltered and coddled her like some helpless
   CHILD – like Stark did.

“Wha’ matters s’tha’ it ends – ‘n it will end. One way or ‘nother,
it WILL end. ‘N I’ll be there wit’ ya when it does.

We finish this TOGETHER, no matter how.”

They weren’t going to win. Not unless they all pulled out their best tricks,
especially Wanda, and that was too DANGEROUS. Even if they were on
opposing sides, Clint didn’t want to kill any of them. It didn’t need to go
that far. But until the two soldiers were up in the air and flying, the battle
   would not be surrendered.

      jus’…
break th’law, even if it’s CAP’N ‘MERICA askin’ me to.”

let’s hope it doesn’t LAST. it was as half-hearted a response as clint’s had been. this was their WORLD now, and no matter how much it shifted in the coming days, that paranoia seemed destined to stay with them. ( they had made their choice; now, they had to live with it. ) he listened carefully as clint continued, and he couldn’t help that stirring need to comfort the manto place his hand on the other’s shoulder and offer a word. ( didn’t they say captain america gave damn good speeches? ) steve’s hands remained by his side, however, holding onto the bag of take-out he had purchased on the way over. …i brought food. we can talk over chinese, if you want.

it was a gentle reminder: neither of us are alone in this, pal

image

A heavy sigh came from the archer, as he looked out the window
of his apartment; expression as solemn and serious as his voice.

“I think we both know tha’s a fool’s hope, Cap’.”

He wasn’t trying to be a Debbie Downer or anything; it was… just
   how things were. The world was changing, the tides were turning;
and the fish that swam AGAINST the tide had a much harder time
than those who swam with it. Now the rest of the ocean wanted to
swallow them up; and until some kind of peace was made, all the
   waters were considered
dangerous, and all other fish potential
ENEMIES. Clint didn’t regret his decision; he just regretted he had
to make it in the first place.

The mention of food caused head to turn back towards Steve, keen
eyes having taken notice of the bag earlier. Just didn’t assume it
   was for him too.

“Oh– yeah. One of th’few GOOD things t’come outta this
      century;
fast food. Kitchen’s in here; c’mon.”

Gesturing ‘follow me’ with his hand, Barton turned to walk into the
small-sized kitchen nearby; hardly anything IMPRESSIVE, since
he lived alone. There was an old round wood table with a single
dining chair beside it; though the archer was already returning
with a second, plastic fold-in chair that he sets down for himself,
before scratching the back of his neck
awkwardly.

“Sorry– don’ ‘ave guests very often.”

He signed up for this not for the cause, but
to hunt down a murderer. To get revenge.
And now someone else stood in his way.

No.

He would not let this monster get away.
Not again. Even if he had to tear this one
apart.

Move.

Unlike most everyone else involved, Clint didn’t sign up for anything.
He’d planned on just retiring – at least from official hero work – and
find another way to put his skills to good use for the benefit of the world.
Had Steve not come to him with a plea for his assistance, and news
that Wanda was being kept LOCKED away in the Avengers compound
with Vision, the archer would not be here now– to face off against this
stranger in a black catsuit, with very real claws.

While he didn’t have any close personal relationship with this guy’s
target, the Captain did, and Cap was Clint’s
friend. So he’d help to
protect Barnes no matter what; even at the risk of getting SHREDDED
   to pieces.

“NO THANKS, man. M’quite comfortable righ’ ‘ere.”

Okay, well, maybe not comfortable ( especially considering those
   CLAWS, yikes! ), but still—
Clint wasn’t moving.

two word starters. (basically all variations of ‘fuck’)

Clint would have been lying if he said he wasn’t surprised to
hear such language from Wanda. From her brother (God rest
his soul), certainly– but her? Maybe it was just his protective,
motherly hawk INSTINCTS kicking in, but as someone who
had an overly colorful vocabulary himself– and Cap had tried
to curb it multiple times –he didn’t really want the same for the
witch. Though they did have more pressing concerns to worry
   about at the moment…

“Wanda– s’much as I echo tha’ sentiment, now migh’
NOT be th’best time fer it. We gotta keep this up long
‘nough fer Steve ‘n James t’get outta th’airport.

Clint had been brooding for at least the last two hours,
sitting on a chair outside on his balcony and looking up
over the Manhattan cityscape. Features dark, conflicted
and moody, it was clear whatever that was on his mind,
the archer hadn’t found a solution for it.

image

He didn’t hear Kate approach behind him, but he SAW her
   – thanks to her growing shadow on the ground near his feet.
Looking over his shoulder and attempting to mask his solemn
expression– though Barton couldn’t hide the low, miserable
tone of his voice as he greeted her.

      “…’ey Kate.”

image

“Yeah; we do. Some a’us more than others.”

His commentary was meant to be light, nonspecific; though
Clint couldn’t help the way his voice took a slight edge when
he spoke. Everything about him was just on edge right now,
but he tried to relax in Steve’s presence.

      “Besides m’self, y’mean?

   Because technically Barton was a weapon all on his OWN;
in a way different from everyone but Natasha. Some weapons
were made to protect, like Steve and Tony; some were fashioned
to DESTROY, like Thor and Bruce. Assassins and spies, though
   – they were bred to
kill.

      “Nope. Knife’s all I need. Jus’ one slice t’ th’jugular ‘n—”

Stopping himself abruptly, Clint coughed and turned away,
rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.

After watching Captain America: Civil War, I’ve been thinking and crying a lot (mostly crying), about how to take it in terms of my characterization of Clint. What he did, why he did what he did, said what he said, felt what he felt, and reacted to other people and events. His internal thoughts and feelings portrayed on the screen that weren’t necessarily vocalized. Along with his reasoning for not only choosing Cap’s side, but being personally against signing the Accords.

Part of this will be focused on strictly choosing sides and being against the Accords, and then the other part will be focused on other areas of the movie that are still highly important to Clint’s character— because I have to say that this movie is pretty much the only Marvel movie that has captured Hawkeye perfectly (in high part thanks to Renner’s superb acting skills), and while there isn’t much in sheer amount of appearances or lines, the few times that Clint did show up and talk during the movie were always profound, meaningful and added more character to him than all of the other appearances and lines in the other movies combined.

REGARDING THE ACCORDS / CHOOSING SIDES:

  • INDEPENDENCE. Hawkeye’s always been an independent kind of hero. If he thinks there’s a better way to do something or accomplish a goal, even if it breaks the rules or goes against popularly conceived notions, he’ll do it. While he’s good at following orders and in general is more of a ‘do-er’ than a leader, Clint always thinks for himself and if he doesn’t believe that his superior’s way is the right way, he’ll fight it.

  • DUTY. Clint knows that, just like in war, there will ALWAYS be casualties for heroes. They fight the good fight, and fights mean pain; fights mean hurt, and destruction, and loss, and sometimes death. They are not perfect and Clint least of all, as he represents the core ‘humanity’ of the Avengers team and how beautifully flawed they can be (which also adds to their strength). He recognizes all of this, and he knows that trying to save everyone, most of the time means you end up saving no one. Heroes will be blamed for the effects of their deeds even more so than other people, because there’s a general expectation of them not to fail, not to lose– and even one casualty tends to mean that in the eyes of the common people. That won’t stop him from trying to do the right thing. (Headcanon that Peggy rubbed this off on him, i.e. from Sharon’s speech.)

  • LOYALTY. There is practically nothing that Clint wouldn’t do for Steve. Whatever and whenever Captain America asked him for help, there is a 99.9% chance that Hawkeye would answer the call. He has an incredible amount of trust, faith and admiration in his friend. That being said, if he truly did feel that Cap was wrong on this, Clint would stand on his own; but he truly 100% believed that signing the Accords was not the right way to do things. He had no reason to actually oppose it though, until Steve needed his help.

  • PROACTIVE. Clint, as can easily be seen, is more often than not a very proactive person, that focuses on solving problems and getting things done rather than arguing about how they should be done, constantly worrying about consequences or who should be blamed for them. He also can’t stand idly by when something is going wrong, even if some people don’t see it or think it’s the right thing. The same goes for if he sees people sitting around doing nothing. And the Sokovia Accords would have, eventually guaranteed, forced him to sit back and watch when he felt he had to do something.
